Morgantown WV Portrait Photographer | Rediscovering Film

When I was in college I loved, loved, loved shooting and playing with film. I shot mostly in manual mode and found the most creative aspect to be playing in the darkroom. If you have never fully processed a roll of your own film, I can tell you it is magically terrifying! Everything from being blinded by the pitch blackness of the darkroom to the meticulous chemical measurements made me a nervous wreck each time. However there was no greater feeling than to see your image appear out of thin air.

This year I have found that my aesthetic shooting and editing style always leads be back to the clean look of classic film. I spent a good bit of time tweaking my digital workflow to match that of the film stocks I have loved. I read some good film books and purchased an old F100 from our local photo store.  These images are my first test roll. My main goal was decent exposure and lots of field notes.

The best and worst part of shooting film, much like the darkroom, is the waiting…Did I get good exposure? How was my focus? Did I frame my composition well? Did I check my background clutter? With digital I get instant reassurance and the option to re-shoot. Then your email pings a notification that your scans are ready and its like Christmas, it brings that excitement of watching your image appear in the darkroom. So I will be toting my F100 proudly beside my D810 for sure!

These are hybrid tests. The left is my digital D810 and the right is film from the F100.
